Ultimate guide on Affirmations

Affirmations are simply spoken statements! Our words have power.

Imagine how you feel when someone praises you with words like, “You are a great person“, “I am lucky to have you as my friend“, “You are so beautiful“, “You are awesome“.

Now imagine how you feel when someone insults you and tell things like, “You are a cheater“, “I hate you“, “You are ugly“, “You are disgusting“.

In both scenarios do you feel the same or different? Do you have the same respect for these two people saying different things? Which set of words will make you happy? Empower you and build your self-esteem? Obviously, the first one when someone praised you. Isn’t it? That’s affirmation in action my friend.

Our words are incredibly powerful! While negative words deeply wound, which sometimes last for a lifetime, positive words on the other hand build you up.

How to define affirmation?

Affirmations are spoken commands, purposefully made to positively change some aspect of your life. An affirmation is simply a statement that you repeat to yourself over and over again.

After we are born, we pick up our vocabulary and also our subconscious believes from the people around us. In other words, our mind is getting programmed by the people around us, rather unconsciously. Whatever comes in, we just accept it and store it. All that we have heard, touched, smelt, tasted, and seen are stored in our minds. It is like a hard disk of your computer, which holds all the information you filled in. And then recall it when appropriate.

So whenever a situation arises in the future, your subconscious mind search for the old information and emulate the same emotions and environments.

For example, if you touch the fire in childhood and got burn, every time you see the fire, your mind replicates that scene to keep you safe.

Unfortunately, it also keeps you imprisoned in an old pattern unless you make a conscious effort to change that underlying belief. This is why so many people find themselves in similar relationships and situations that they saw their parents in while they were growing up. Most people also hold very strongly or similar views of their parents.

Affirmation is the first step to change that underlying belief which is not serving you any longer.

Affirmation Healing

Let’s go back to the earlier scenario, when someone was either praising you or insulting you, with a little bit of twist this time.

Instead of someone else using those words with you imagine you’re standing in front of a mirror and repeating a negative statement to yourself over and over again. “I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!” How does this feel? Not very nice, is it?

How about a positive statement? “You are so beautiful! You are so beautiful! You are so beautiful!” Now, that’s much better.

You might be thinking, why would anybody do that to themselves? You wouldn’t do that to yourself, would you? You wouldn’t expose yourself to such negativity on purpose.

Well, I’ve got some news for you. Your subconscious mind is already exposing you to 65000 thoughts per day on average. And if you’re not already totally happy and completely successful, then your thoughts are most likely negative.

Don’t believe me? Take notice of your thoughts for the next 24 hours. If you’re like most people, you’ll be quite shocked at the negativity that comes from your subconscious mind.

And that, my friends, is affirmations at work, sadly not so much in your favor!

If the statement is positive, it empowers you. If it is negative, it hurts you.

Whether you like it or not, you are currently using affirmations. Unfortunately, though, you’re not controlling the process and your subconscious mind is subjecting you to a constant barrage of negativity. Negative statement after negative statement after negative statement!

Years of negative thoughts have led you to have negative beliefs about yourself and your life. These negative beliefs led to negative habits. And these negative habits are what led you to the life you live now.

So, if you’re not totally happy with your life, what can you do about it?

It’s really quite simple. You need to take conscious control of your thought process and replace those negative thoughts with positive ones.

Conscious repetition of positive affirmations will over time lead to your subconscious mind also producing positive and empowering thoughts. These positive thoughts will lead to positive beliefs about yourself and your life. These positive beliefs will lead to positive habits. And positive habits will lead you to a life of happiness and success.

And that’s a wonderful way to live!

Affirmations: Why is it not working for you

Watch your internal dialogue. Look at it closely. It takes diligence to change the way you think. When you notice yourself thinking negatively choose to think the opposite. This way, you neutralize the negative thought. Now think of a positive thought again! You have just reversed the negative thinking at that moment, and remember you only have this moment. No other time exists! You are in the NOW.

The whole point of affirmations is to convince the mind that what you are repeating is the truth. As you verbalize your desire, you will find negative emotions and contrary statements entering your conscious awareness. You must deal with these negative thoughts as they arise for your affirmations to work!

Many people use affirmations with EFT to eliminate the negativity that comes up as a result of affirming something that feels untrue.

Emotional Freedom Technique >>

During your normal day daydream about what things might be. Imagine things the way you wish them to be. If you catch yourself thinking “this is just a daydream – a fantasy” then stop! Think the opposite. It is not a daydream but your reality. Now think about it again. Release the resistance as it arises in whatever you can.

If you just repeat affirmations with no feeling, or worse, feeling that it isn’t true, then you are actually affirming the opposite in your own mind! It is why some people find their situations actually getting worse when they work with affirmations. You must release the resistance by creating the feeling that the affirmation is true.

By creating the feeling of ‘having it now’ while repeating your affirmation you will begin to retrain your subconscious mind to think positively, and you will ultimately begin to consciously create a life that dreams are made of!

Affirmation – What to do to make it work for you

Here are some guidelines to use when you are working with affirmation.

1. Be very clear about what you want

Leave no ambiguity. Write out all the details that you would like to see and experience in the thing that you want. The clearer you are about your intentions more power you give to your affirmations

2. Phrase your affirmations positively

The mind accepts as truth the words that you give it. Make the affirmation positive!

Say, “I am happy!” rather than “I am no longer depressed!”. The first one is positive while the second is a double negative statement?

Or

Instead of “I will not be nervous during my interview with the warden “ say “I will be calm and self-assured during my interview”

3. The affirmation must be in the present tense

Instead of saying, “One day I will be happy!” say, “I am happy now!”

When you phrase your goal as it is happening even if you have not achieved it yet, your subconscious believes mental messages and works to make them a reality.

4. Make the statements personal to yourself

Use the phrase “I” or your own name.

5. Keep affirmations short and use simple words

In other words, make it easy to remember.

6. Include a positive emotion

A phrase that triggers a positive emotion strengthens the affirmation. For example, “My goals are valuable, and it excites me.”

The more intense the feelings, the faster you will see a positive change in your life.

7. Say your affirmation at least 6 times a day, with full faith that it is coming true

Repetition is key. Repetition enhances self-confidence, acts as a reminder, and stimulates your subconscious to help you achieve your goals in life. Try placing a copy on the wall beside your bathroom mirror, so you see it each morning and evening. Place a copy on an index card that you carry in your pocket, and refer to it several times a day.

Note: If you feel resistance, don’t give up. Use the Emotional Freedom Technique to shift the energy. Mindless repetitions will not take you anywhere.

8. Partner up with an affirmation buddy

Arrange that every time you see or speak to that person, you will say an affirmation to them. And they’ll say one to you. Imagine how good it would feel to hear someone tell you several times a day, “I love you and I value your friendship so highly. You’re a wonderful person.”

9. Listen your affirmation often

Record yourself saying the affirmation over and over, and then listen to this whenever you have a chance. While getting ready for work…while driving to work…during your lunch break…driving home, and while relaxing in the evening.

6 ways to Supercharge Your Affirmations

1. Release negative thoughts

Though repeated positive affirmations affect our subconscious and make our life better, unfortunately, we don’t start this process with an empty subconscious mind. By the time you make a conscious decision to use affirmation to improve your life, your mind is loaded with so much garbage aka negative thoughts.

Just imagine if you have a glass full of muddy water, how long will it take for you to replace it with clean and pure water if you are adding the only couple of drops every day?

It’s better to make an effort to throw the muddy water first for a quicker result. Isn’t it?

Our mind is no different. So, for quicker results, it is important to release negative thoughts before we install new affirmations in it.

One of the fastest and better methods I know of how to do just that is called EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique. By simply tapping on specific energy meridians on the body this method helps to reconfigure the negative aspects of stored affirmation or memory into a positive energy flow, freeing us from its hold. Check out the details of the EFT  here

Releasing old unproductive affirmations or beliefs is definitely going to take an effort and a considerable amount of self-awareness to accomplish. Therefore, it is a good idea to immediately start the positive affirmation practice while we are trying to release the old and unwanted ones.

2. Stop negative self-talk

Make a cautious effort to catch yourself when you are having negative self-talk. When you catch yourself STOP and REPHRASE. Eliminate negative, self-damaging words. Focus on what best you can do, and then just go and do it.

3. Make positive communication a habit

Focus on the positive in goal statements, self-talk, and all communications. Positive words convey confidence, commitment, and enthusiasm. Pay attention to thought thoughts and words and make those subtle changes.

For example instead of “I will try” say “I will “.

Instead of saying “I should “ use “I will “.

Instead of “I must “ say “ I want to “ or “ I choose to”. It will take off the pressure and give you the feeling of being in control.

4. Keep an attitude of gratitude

Recognizing and thanking for something you have. automatically puts us into a state of allowing and receiving. It puts us in a state of non-resistance with the Universe. This is powerful enough when we’re giving thanks for something we already have (because it attracts more things to be grateful for), but when we do it with something we want, the power is magnified drastically! Why? Because we are putting our full faith into the belief that what we desire will come to be in the physical realm.

5. Affirm the process

In your affirmation choose the words that support the process of manifestation. That way it makes us easier to believe. Believing that something is in progress is a smaller mental lean than trying to believe that you already achieved it. It takes away all the resistance from the process

For example

Instead of “I am size 0” use “My body is becoming slimmer and lighter every day.”

6. Focus on what you WANT and not on what you DON’T WANT

Just omit from words, what you don’t want to see in your life. Instead of ‘losing weight’ get a ‘healthy lean body’. Instead of ‘Getting rid of debt’ show appreciation for your ‘growing abundance’. Focus on freeing up your mind, body, and soul and get into the state of happiness, joy, and Vitality.

7. Write them down

Make a practice to write down your affirmation a couple of times every day along with verbal repetition.

Now that you know how to create and use affirmation to change your life, put it for better use.

For your convenience, we regularly create affirmation cards to help you change one particular area of your life at a time. Have a look and see what you can use to speed up your progress.
